Working as a detective in LAPD’s Open Unsolved Unit, veteran Harry Bosch is in his last year before he should retire under the Deferred Retirement Option Plan. Despite this, he is still working diligently to solve any cases sent his way and now he’s been paired with the youngest detective in the unit – Lucy Soto. Their case concerns who murdered Orlando Merced, a musician who had been shot ten years ago in Mariachi Plaza but has only just died. The victim had suffered for many years because of the shooting and it is only after his death that the bullet can be retrieved from his body – it had been lodged in his spine for all those years, causing lead poisoning, him to have limbs amputated and, finally, his death.
How the two set off to solve the crime, linking it to others of a more personal nature for Lucy, political intrigue and great teamwork make this a brilliant addition to the series of books starring Bosch, but you really don’t need to have read any of them to appreciate the brilliant writing by this author, true craftsmanship! The characters are portrayed, warts and all, interacting with each other in realistic manners, the storyline is brilliant, with lots of twist, turns and it ends with a totally unexpected cliff hanger! Superb story, very highly recommended!
