Miss Grace Halton was born in America and has only returned to England in an endeavour to raise money to help her very ill mother. To do this she has introduced herself to her maternal grandparents who don’t exactly welcome her but are prepared to help finance her introduction into society in the hope that she can marry into the nobility. They are also prepared to provide a dowry to help her in this. She really needs to find a husband who will let her go back to look after her Mum as soon as possible!

Oliver York has returned home from fighting in the war to discover that his father has died and he is now the very impoverished new Earl of Carlisle. He needs to marry an heiress quickly to prevent the debts left by his father resulting in him, his tenants and his servants being homeless. He really shouldn’t be attracted to a penniless debutante. . . .

The two have requirements not available from the other but their mutual attraction and respect for each other make it difficult for them to consider anyone else. Grace’s obnoxious Grandmother is determined to raise her own social status by having Grace marry someone with monies and a title, the Earl of Carlisle is not what she’s looking for even though she really doesn’t seem to like Grace at all.

Can love find a way to help both of them? Will Grace manage to get the medicines to help her Mum in time to save her? A great romance, with a wide range of other characters who I hope to read more of in future books in this series. If you enjoy reading 19th Century romances, you’ll love this addition to their ranks.

Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too, for letting me read this book in exchange for an honest review.
