This is such an enthralling, powerful book – I just didn’t want to put it down till I’d finished it! If you’re in the mood for a thought provoking, totally enthralling read, this could be just the book for you.
Doctor Maria Martinez is a plastic surgeon, currently on secondment to a London hospital when she is found guilty of murdering a Catholic priest. Now Maria has Aspergers and much of the story is told from her point of view, taking you into her mind, her thought processes, her memories and interpretation of the world around her. The prison is certainly outside her comfort zone and she finds it very difficult to cope with life there, especially as more and more thoughts impinge on her reality, making her query what really happened with the priest and in her personal past history.
Discussions and explorations of events, feelings and reactions with a variety of prison personnel reveal more intriguing facts that just don’t add up, making Maria question her own sanity and interpretation of the world around her. Allowing yourself to “get into” Maria’s head was key to understanding this story which was unpredictable, very sophisticated and superbly written. I had no hesitation in awarding this a five star review – it has a great plot and I really hope there will be a sequel to it soon! Don’t try reading it when you’re tired, confused or looking for some light reading, this is a book for when you’re ready to have your view on reality challenged and turned upside down repeatedly as you read this fascinating thriller.
Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too,
