This is apparently the third book in the series. I didn’t realise this until after I started reading and discussing this with my daughter. It seems she has signed copies for the earlier books at home and, having thoroughly enjoyed this book, I’ll be checking them out, too!
Eleanor Chance goes by a variety of names but most folk seem to call her Elle. She’s also the Oracle – the sole being protecting the barrier between the powers of Light and Shadow. The Council of Warlocks has been taken over by Patrice Chevalier, a powerful Shadow Master who wants Elle either dead or under his control.
Elle’a husband has been trapped in the Shadowlands and she’s desperate to rescue him. Pirates, shadow beings, problems with aether, her inability to totally understand and control her own powers all conspire to make this an enthralling read, a great battle between good and evil. Nothing is clear cut, there are additional dangers, twists and surprises throughout the book. Highly entertaining for anyone who enjoys exploring fantasy worlds where anything can and will happen!
Elle’s grief and determination to rescue her husband is portrayed in a very moving manner but this makes her subsequent relationship with Dashwood somewhat unbelievable, not in character. Throughout the novel Elle is a feisty, strong, female protagonist and the story ends in a manner that leaves the way open for subsequent novels in the series – I’ll certainly be looking out for them!
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley too,
