My Review:

This book was a total surprise for me in a very pleasant manner. I hadn’t read anything by the author before, so wasn’t quite sure what I was going to think of her writing style but the synopsis was intriguing and I decided to give it a go – and I’m very glad I did! The story concerns groups of paranormally talented people who call themselves Sky Ghosts and their equally talented enemies, the Sky Beasts.  When the sisters, Jane and Pain (real name Patricia but no one called her that!), discover two men being attacked by the Beasts and overhear the Beasts discussing whether to capture or kill the men. They are intrigued enough to rescue them. Their organisation can see no reasons for the beasts interest in the men, but the girls are assigned to keep them both safe. That’s the start to a fast paced adventure in which the feisty young ladies are definitely the heroines – and woe will betide any male getting in their way. They will have battles to fight, friends who will be in danger, and the mystery of why the Beasts want one of the two men, too, in this intriguingly different paranormal adventure.

The author manages to portray the emotional turmoil of all the characters as the story unfurls, making it easy for readers to empathise with them in the different scenarios. The skills and talents of the Ghosts and Beasts are made to feel believable, their encounters and fights action packed and thrilling. Their story encapsulates a variety of genre, with mysteries to be solved, secrets to uncover, battles to be won and even love to be developed. This is a great adventure that I suspect will particularly appeal to young adult readers as well as to older readers, like myself and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys definitely different paranormal adventures and romance!

Many thanks to the author gifting me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Synopsis:

“The Avengers meet Shadowhunters!” Unseen in their black gear against the night sky, there are Sky Ghosts – gifted warriors who have been hiding among humans for centuries. They are bodyguards of the highest caliber and protectors of their cities at night, when they hunt those who choose the dark side, Sky Beasts. Jane and Pain from the New York Ghosts Headquarters don’t think twice about beheading a Beast or two. One night, they save two young men from their enemies’ blades and find themselves in the middle of a war. As they put their lives at stake to save their wards, the main mystery remains unsolved: why would the Beasts hunt two ordinary human boys? Spellbinding and violent, Alexandra Engellmann’s Sky Ghosts series is exactly what Urban fantasy fans are looking for – a blend of action, humor, mystery, and a unique magic system. “Sky Ghosts is a great mixture of sword-fighting, humor, wit, sexual tension, and “imperfect romance” that brilliantly lets the readers feel like the characters, while supernatural, are fairly ordinary people underneath it all.” – Joe Jackson, author of the Eve of Redemption series “This book has everything. Love, action, fantasy and world-building. This is one of those books which you can imagine sliding into reality, despite its fantastical elements.” – Kelly St. Clare, author of the The Tainted Accords.
