My Review:
This is a beautifully illustrated, wonderfully weird story and riddle. The world created by the author is decidedly different, populated by magnificently created colourful creatures and written with a riddle to be solved and a website on which to enter a competition where readers can put their answer.
The story is convoluted, silly, wacky and yet still manages to be engaging and intriguing. The language choices are at times amazing but not necessarily appropriate for the target age group of 4 to 9 year olds. For most children in this age range, this is a book for adults to share with children rather than one for them to read independently. It will certainly help improve the range and vocabulary experienced by most youngsters, introducing a variety of fantastic names for the characters and places and using complex sentences to describe scenarios and events.
This is a book I’m not quite sure about….. yet I did enjoy it. I’m not sure how children in the age range would relate to it. I could imagine that for many the vocabulary used would make it difficult for them to relate to but only by getting greater exposure to such quality writing will their own use of language improve. Definitely a book where I’d recommend you try to take a look at a few pages before deciding if it is appropriate to purchase for a particular child but it certainly is well worth checking out!
Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too, for letting me read an ARC of this book in exchange for this, an honest review.
