My Review:

This is the first book in the new series by this author and boy is it hot! Both main characters have had far from safe, stable upbringings because one of their parents really wasn’t reliable or caring. However, they are both trying to do the best for themselves and he is trying to do all he can to keep his family safe – even if that means breaking the law. When he spots Shay Freestone being harassed by a man who doesn’t want to take No as her answer, Hugh Colton steps in to rescue her, even though he’s driving a car he’s just stolen. He doesn’t feel good about being a thief but it is the way he can get his family free from the debts to a crime boss that his absconding father had accumulated and left them to pay. He’s so nearly made all the payments, only a month left to go and they’ll be cleared so why is he risking everything for this stranger?

She’s been humiliated by her ex-boyfriend, her boss, who ridiculed her and their relationship to their coworkers, causing her to leave her relatively well paid job as a graphics designer whilst still struggling to pay off the debts left following the death and funeral of her beloved Grandma. Now she’s working three different jobs to try to clear her debts and really doesn’t need the hassle of a man trying to force himself onto her. That’s when her knight in a lovely car comes to her rescue – only he doesn’t talk like an knight! In fact he’s clear about his desire for her and what he’d like them to do but he is also a gentleman in leaving any decisions to her and not being like the jerk he rescued her from. Should she give in to temptation or are the risks for both of them just too high?

The characters are well developed, both with childhood abandonment by their parents having severe impacts on their lives in very different ways. It is a steamy, hot contemporary romance packed with mobsters, thieves, strong family bonds and love. It isn’t for the squeamish and it certainly isn’t a closed door romance. The hero is dominant with a very caring, soft centre whilst the heroine is relatively naive, innocent and caring with a very secret passionate heart. The secondary characters are also brilliantly portrayed – especially Hugh’s brother Joe and their best friend and coworker, Adam. I’m looking forward to reading more about them as the series progresses!

Synopsis:

He’ll risk it all for one more night… When Hugh Colton’s father ran off, leaving him with a pile of gambling debts and a crime boss demanding repayment in stolen cars, his options were limited. Now his life’s on hold, and the last thing he needs to be worrying about is a distressed redhead in a Poison Ivy costume. He sure as hell shouldn’t be rescuing her in the car he’s just boosted—or asking her to come home with him. But a thief like him can’t offer more, no matter how much he wants to. Everyone either leaves or is taken away, at least that’s all graphics designer Shay Freestone has ever known. And after a confidence shattering, career destroying break-up, she’s sworn off relationships forever. So it’s a good thing this raw, bearded, mountain of a man isn’t her type. Yet as one reckless hot night leads to another, their casual, no-strings affair starts to feel like so much more. Can two hearts with too many secrets dare for a future?
