My Review
This is very different historical and paranormal fiction. Forget about tales of Merlin and King Arthur, this time the people using magic are Herleva and her Arlette and their target is Lady Caitlyn, the wife of a welsh king. When he is murdered in battle, his body cut into three bloody pieces, she is encouraged to run away by one of her late husband’s soldiers and the adventure begins . . . Sorry, if I start saying more I’m bound to give away spoilers and I always try not to do that! However, I will say that witchcraft has a major role to play in this story, making Lady Caitlyn a tool for a witch with royal aspirations . . .
This is a somewhat blood thirsty story, much of it set in England during the Norman era, a time of castles, lords, serfs, conflict, betrayal and magic. It is the first story in a trilogy, the next books ‘A Stain on the Soul’ (releasing in October 2018) and ‘Another Kind of Magic’ (releasing in November, 2018). Assume everyone is an enemy and has their own secret agenda as you read this action packed story. The characters are well developed and the story a very different take on the era – complete with a domestic cat shifter!
I requested and was given a copy of this book without obligation. I chose to read it and this is my honest review after doing so.
Synopsis:
A dead king, a queen who is more than she seems, and a witch who uses the dark arts to entrap her.
Queen, widow, beggar – Lady Caitlyn is all three, and now she can add murderer to the list.
When death and treachery propel her south to Normandy, to seek sanctuary with the exiled Prince Alfred, visions of a woman with ancient eyes travel with her.
Herleva is a woman filled with ambition and greed. A woman who intends to be more than a commoner. A woman who gets what she wants by whatever means possible, even if she has to practice the dark arts to achieve her goals.
A woman who is a witch.
Caitlyn finds herself caught up in a magic which changes her very being. A magic which produces a king to change the lives of every man, woman, and child in England.
