Somewhere to review books I'm reading without giving away any spoilers!
Please welcome Diane Esguerra, author of The Oshun Diaries today. She has kindly answered my questions and I’m sharing her responses with you. Read on to discover her replies, discover more about her and her travel memoir as well as links to give UK readers the opportunity to enter a rafflecopter giveaway which has paperback copies of this book as prizes!
Where did you get the inspiration for the book?
A chance encounter with the love goddess, Oshun, many years ago in Africa, and, more recently, in Florida.
What is your writing process?
I have a special notebook that I scribble into when I’m feeling inspired – which can be anywhere, anytime – even waking up from a dream in the middle of the night. I allow the thoughts and ideas plenty of space to develop into something that I feel confident people may want to read.
Do you write using pen and paper or on a computer?
I work out the structure and core ideas in pencil first. When I’m clear about what it is I’m trying to say I move on to the laptop. I’m less creative when around technology!
Who is your favourite character out of your story and why?
As this is a travel memoir I’m not sure you could call a goddess a character – so it would have to be Suzanne Wenger, her high priestess, an amazing woman who is also an artist.
If you were a character in your story, which would you like to be?
I feature pretty large in this memoir anyway – but Beyoncé also makes an appearance at the end. And I’d love to be her!
How and why did you choose the names for your main characters?
Some of the names in the memoir stay the same, others I’ve changed to protect the privacy of the person concerned.

High priestesses are few and far between, white ones in Africa even more so. When Diane Esguerra hears of a mysterious Austrian woman worshipping the Ifa river goddess Oshun in Nigeria, her curiosity is aroused.
It is the start of an extraordinary friendship that sustains Diane through the death of her son and leads to a quest to take part in Oshun rituals. Prevented by Boko Haram from returning to Nigeria, she finds herself at Ifa shrines in Florida amid vultures, snakes, goats’ heads, machetes, a hurricane and a cigar-smoking god. Her quest steps up a gear when Beyoncé channels Oshun at the Grammys and the goddess goes global.
Mystifying, harrowing and funny, The Oshun Diaries explores the lure of Africa, the life of a remarkable woman and the appeal of the goddess as a symbol of female empowerment.
