Where did you get the inspiration for the book/series?
It was a strange moment, standing in my bedroom, thinking about plastic waste. It sounds bizarre I realise. I was standing there, having just made my daughter’s packed lunch, wondering what it was going to take for me to stop using so much plastic. I started thinking about all the pictures you see of whales and birds with plastic in their stomach (sorry not happy I know!) and wondered what I would do if I saw something that belonged to me in one of those piles. That was how it came about. From then on it was wondering how I could make a comedy book about it!
What is your writing process?
I write whenever I can, wherever I can. Being a full time teacher too makes it my only option.
Do you write using pen and paper or on a computer?
I plan in pen and write in pen if I don’t have a computer available, but normally I use the computer once I’ve got the story sorted in my mind.
Who is your favourite character out of your stories and why?
In this story it’s going to be Fiona. I like to write characters with human flaws and I think she has plenty. For that reason I also love Letty in The Afterlife of Walter Augustus.
If you were a character in your story, which would you like to be?
I’d quite like to be a sperm whale, so maybe Martha. Although I’d rather not get stuck in the Thames!
How and why did you choose the names for your main characters?
Sometimes they have a certain name that I feel fits straight away. Other times I need to adjust them to fit in with the story and other characters. It feels a little like finding a name for a baby!
Thank you so much for answering my questions!

With her personal life on the rocks, it’s going to take a whale sized miracle to keep her afloat.
Event planner Fiona Reeves did not have her husband’s sudden departure on her schedule. However, she’s certain that it’s only a hiccup and he’ll be back in no time, begging for forgiveness. Fortunately there’s a distraction of mammoth proportions swimming in the River Thames.
Absorbed by the story of Martha the sperm whale, Fiona attempts to carry on life as usual as she awaits her husband’s return. However, nothing can prepare her for the dramatic turn of events that throws her life into ever greater turmoil. The road ahead has many paths and for Fiona it’s time to sink or swim.
Fiona and the Whale is a poignant and often hilarious contemporary fiction novel. If you enjoy topical tales, second chances and a little bit of romance, you’ll love this new book from the Kindle Storyteller Award Winner, Hannah Lynn.
