Somewhere to review books I'm reading without giving away any spoilers!

#Interview with Helen Buckley, author of ‘Star in the Shadows’ #Giveaway #BlogTour

Today I’m welcoming Helen Buckley to my blog. She’s the author of the intriguing sounding Star in the Shadows and has kindly agreed to answer my questions. Read on to see what she had to say and to learn more about her and her book. There’s even a giveaway offering UK readers the chance to enter to win signed copy of Star in the Shadows, a beautiful dreams and goal planning journal, a star print scarf, and three yummy chocolate bars from Creighton’s Chocolaterie. Good luck!

Where did you get the inspiration for the book/series?

I’d always carried stories in my head – this was one of them! I love a good rags-to-riches story, a character who overcomes challenges, with a dash of romance too. Although the story is not based on real-life events, naturally inspirations from my own life do creep in. I’ll use the names of people I know, or base characters loosely on friends.

What is your writing process?

I start out with the big picture stuff – outlining the themes of the story. Then I think about the characters – their challenges, their personalities, their motivations – and how they change within the story. Then I plot out the scenes, although inevitably inspiration strikes as I write and many scenes are added and others removed.

Do you write using pen and paper or on a computer?

On a computer. I type faster than I write.

Who is your favourite character out of your stories and why?

The main character, Kiara, is my favourite. She’s a kind and talented girl who’s not had the best start in life. She makes some bad decisions, trusts the wrong people and develops some unhealthy coping mechanisms, but all along I was rooting for her, and I hope other people do too.

If you were a character in your story, which would you like to be?

I’d be Sarah – she’s a gossipy girl who’s a bit spoilt but she’s got a good heart.

How and why did you choose the names for your main characters?

Kiara and Shane were the names I had always carried in my head for the main characters – I have no idea where they came from.

Sarah is the name of my oldest friend, although the character isn’t based on her. I chose the name Alicia based on a girl I knew at school, the character I wrote reminded me a little of her. The name I struggled with the most was the name of Kiara’s mother. I originally named her Kathleen but then realised that was my Nan’s name and the character isn’t the best mother in the world, so I felt it would be better to change it!

Thanks for the interesting questions!

Thank you for answering them!

More about ‘Star in the Shadows’…..

The world thinks that pop superstar Kiara Anderson has it all, but she spends her nights drinking away memories of her childhood and life as a teen runaway.

The Jacobs family are desperate to see the girl next door again and discover why she ran away, especially their son Shane, who blames himself for her disappearance.

When Kiara’s manager forces her into a reveal-all TV interview she knows the family she loved more than her own will finally discover the truth.

Can she overcome her demons or will the shadows of the past rob her of fame, fortune, and a chance to finally fall in love?
