Lilian and the Irresistible Duke by Virginia Heath

A reunion in Rome…Sparks an affair to remember!

Responsible widow Lilian Fairclough is persuaded to travel to Rome for a hard-earned break and to let down her hair! She’s surprised to be reunited with passionate, cynical Italian duke, Pietro Venturi. He reawakens her sensual side and intrigues her with glimpses of pain beneath his rakish surface. Enticed into a secret and temporary affair – what will happen once she returns home?

My Review:

This is a historical romance but very different to most as so much of it is centred around Italy and Rome. The heroine is 45 year old Lilian Fairclough who is encouraged to travel to Rome by her grown up children a decade after her husband died. She’s always been hard working, keeping the Foundation he’d established a vibrant concern and they have decided she’s earned a holiday. She travels with her sister-in-law, Alexandra to visit her friend Carlotta. Little does Lilian know of the matchmaking plans these two ladies have made! Lilian thinks she’s off to explore the great artwork in the city but they’re really endeavouring to bring her together with Carlotta’s brother, Pietro. He, however, is determined to stay away from her but fate has other plans!

The development of the relationship between Lilian and Pietro is fraught with difficulties even though they are both attracted to each other. The story helps explore different cultural expectations and there are great contrasts between the open, caring attitude of Lilian with the more reticent Pietro. It is great that the reasons for Pietro’s closed attitude are revealed as the story progresses and how Lilian can see behind his facade, to discern his true emotions. There is plenty of angst and turmoil, the path to true love certainly doesn’t run smoothly, and there are characters you’ll love and others who you’ll definitely not in this highly entertaining read. The background information on the Renaissance artists and setting provide a vivid backdrop to the events and certainly added to my enjoyment of the story. This is another great historical romance from this talented author that I have no hesitation in recommending to anyone who enjoys this genre.

I requested and was gifted a copy of this book and this is my honest review after choosing to read it.

Author Bio –

When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Despite that, it still takes her forever to fall asleep.
