My Review:

What a great historical romance this proved to be! It begins when Maximillian Aldersley, the reclusive new Earl of Rivenhall, is out riding round his new estates. He spots someone digging holes and, when he investigates, discovers Miss Euphemia Nithercott, dressed in trousers and coated in mud digging away. She’s an archaeologist with a photographic memory, extremely intelligent, very determined and not at all in awe of him, despite his horrendous scars. He bans her from further excavating on his lands but isn’t convinced she’ll heed his instructions . . . . She unsettles him. She isn’t frightened of him, in fact she stands up to him and speaks her mind . . . . Maybe she’ll prove to be just the person to help him heal and face life again?

Effie is a superb character, so academically intelligent, focussed and resilient but also lonely and somewhat lost. Max is still angry over everything that has happened in his recent past, struggling to cope with the changes and stubbornly determined to withdraw from society. The clashes between these two are superbly portrayed, their romance fraught with misunderstandings, fears and low self esteem. It is a lovely tale of helping the other to succeed, seeing what they believe to be flaws as endearing and learning to love. There’s plenty of humour mixed up with a serving of angst to make this a thoroughly enjoyable read that I have no hesitation in highly recommending!

I requested and was gifted a copy of this book and this is my honest review after choosing to read it.

Author Bio –

When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Despite that, it still takes her forever to fall asleep.
