The Ticklemore Christmas Toy Shop by Liz Davies – heartwarming, festive, pensioners’ romance!

You’re never too old to fall in love…

There is a disturbance in the force and octogenarian Hattie Jenkins can feel it in her water. Still active and spritely, she guesses that the miserable-looking gentleman sitting morosely in the café where she works, might be the reason.

Widowed Alfred Miller has recently moved in with his daughter because she is worried that he’s becoming too frail and forgetful to look after himself. And he’s not in the least bit happy about it, especially since his home is soon be cleared and sold.

But when he enlists Hattie’s help to save some of his precious belongings, he doesn’t realise that Hattie’s mission is to save more than a few sticks of furniture. She’s on a mission to save him, too.

My Review:

This is an adorable, heartwarming story, involving a community effort and pensioners’ romance – absolutely brilliant!

Hattie Jenkins knows something is about to happen, she just doesn’t know what! She’s almost eighty but is a feisty, determined lady who still works regularly in the Bookylicious café. When Alfred Miller comes into the café, she decides he’s the happening – she needs to cheer him up. Alfred has recently moved to live with his daughter and her husband because she has decided he’s to frail to look after himself. She’s a retired headteacher and likes to know where he is, what he’s doing, who he is speaking to – she makes him feel like a rebellious child, rather than her father. She’s also decided it is time to clear out and sell his home, the home she grew up in and where he has so many memories about his life with her mother, his wife, who passed away three years ago. When Alfred asks Hattie to help save some of his belongings, little did they realise this would be the start of an unexpected adventure for them both and many members of their community – an adventure that will lead to new beginnings, opportunities and even romance!

Hattie is an elderly dynamo, letting nothing stand in her way, despite her age and growing infirmities. Alfred’s life is certainly shook up by their encounters! This story had me cringing at how Alfred’s daughter treated him, even though she was doing it for the best of reasons . . . . it was great how their understanding and relationship grew through the story. The Toyshop team are all brilliant characters and there are many hilarious moments throughout the story. It is a brilliant story of second chances, unexpected opportunities and love.

Many thanks to the publishers for my copy of this lovely book which I have voluntarily read and honestly reviewed.

Author Bio –

Liz Davies writes feel-good, light-hearted stories with a hefty dose of romance, a smattering of humour, and a great deal of love.

She’s married to her best friend, has one grown-up daughter, and when she isn’t scribbling away in the notepad she carries with her everywhere (just in case inspiration strikes), you’ll find her searching for that perfect pair of shoes. She loves to cook but isn’t very good at it, and loves to eat – she’s much better at that! Liz also enjoys walking (preferably on the flat), cycling (also on the flat), and lots of sitting around in the garden on warm, sunny days.

She currently lives with her family in Wales, but would ideally love to buy a camper can and travel the world in it.

This sounds lovely. I enjoy romance stories involving mature characters, but throw in Christmas and it sounds doubly wonderful. Great review Elaine.
