Title: A Surrealist Affair
Author: Jacqueline Corcoran
Publisher: Entangled, Entangled: Amara
Pub Date 17 May 2021
This is a contemporary romantic suspense with art as the pivotal ingredient. Elle Dakin is a doctoral Art History student, struggling to get her mentor, Diane Roche, to agree to the subject for her doctorate. However, whilst her mentor is away and not to be disturbed, Elle is required to travel to Paris to verify a painting suspected to be an undiscovered work by her favourite artist. She should have known things were too good to be true! Get ready for her to be a victim of pickpockets and to inadvertently get into the middle of a major international Art theft investigation. The FBI agent investigating is Ryan DeLong, who is only doing this to try to get back into counter terrorism assignments again. He’s undercover as an Art Exporter but the attraction between the two grows, so does the danger they are both in. Can this quiet young woman help solve the case? Can he resist their mutual attraction? Most of all, can they both survive?
The story starts off slowly but it is worth persevering as it does pick up and become much more engaging. There are spells of information overload but these show the research carried out by the author to ensure much of what happens in the story is as true to procedures as she can make it. There’s mystery, suspense, deadly danger, Paris and romance in this story along with international intrigue and lots of personal growth for the heroine. This is likely to appeal to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense, even if they don’t have a particular connection to Art.
Thank you to Entangled and NetGalley for my copy of this book which I have voluntarily read and honestly reviewed.
Elle Dakin is shocked when she’s given the opportunity to fly to Paris to attribute a newly discovered painting to her favorite artist. After all, why would they choose a broke, struggling Art History doctoral student for such an honored task? When she arrives in Paris, she realizes the deal was too good to be true—suddenly she’s neck deep in a murder, an international art theft, and threats to her safety. Thank goodness Ryan, an art exporter, comes to her aid, protecting her from the dangerous side of Paris and those who would try to harm her. And it doesn’t hurt that he’s sinfully handsome…until she discovers he has just as many secrets as everyone she’s met on this trip of a lifetime gone wrong…
The last assignment undercover FBI agent Ryan DeLong wants is to investigate art theft. But here he is, stuck in Paris, chasing down the thieves of a million-dollar masterpiece. The only bright spot is Elle, the shy but enchanting doctoral student who teaches him about more than just the beauty of Surrealism. He can’t tell her the truth of his identity, plus he refuses to get romantically involved with anyone while he’s on a case. But when he learns Elle also has things to hide, he begins to doubt everything he thought he knew about her.
