Title: Called Into Action
Author: Paris Wynters
Publisher: Carina Press, Harlequin
Published: May 25th, 2021
This is a lovely contemporary romance with the K-9 search and rescue dog, Havoc, as a heroic character.
Havoc has been trained by Penelope Ramos and they are going to Maple Falls, Vermont, to be assessed to see if they can be certified as a search and rescue partnership, something Penelope has dreamed of doing for years. She’s recently split with boyfriend after he gave her the ultimatum that she choose either him or her dog – and she chose Havoc. An accident on her way to this small township brings her in contact with the Park rangers and, in particular, with Jay Gosling as well as the fire service, law enforcement and the judge! This all leads to a joint project and new friendships for Penelope who is soon involved with many of the locals -maybe New York doesn’t have all that much going for it, after all?
This delightful story has a great setting, a heroic dog, a feisty, determined heroine and a flawed hero. It is a lovely story of breaking down barriers, facing your fears and learning to let love grow. It deals with many issues, including grief and the impact of debilitating illnesses on their victims and their carers. It does involve a rescue mission, but to me that was a minor culminating point in the story, rather than the key to it. It is a lovely story to escape into, with a great sense of community, brilliant characters and a fantastic K-9, too.
Thank you to Carina Press and NetGalley for my copy of this book which I have voluntarily read and honestly reviewed.
They’ll find a way to work together. A young boy’s life depends on it.
Penelope Ramos has dreamed of being a K-9 search-and-rescue handler since she was a little girl. Armed with a quick mind and her German shepherd, Havoc, she rides into Maple Falls, Vermont, determined to get her certification. She isn’t expecting the gruff, unreadable park ranger assigned to evaluate her skills.
Park ranger Jay Gosling is a pro. It’s clear to him that neither Penelope nor her unpredictable canine has what it takes…although his boss feels otherwise. Whatever. Jay will never have to work with them and he has half a mind to escort them both right out of town. But when a young boy goes missing, he doesn’t have that luxury.
Working side by side tests their tentative peace, but Jay and Penelope are together on one thing: they’ll both do whatever it takes to find the missing child—before it’s too late.
