Somewhere to review books I'm reading without giving away any spoilers!
With murder, mystery, tradition and protestors, Relationships between opposing sides festers. But what's the real motive and who is the foe? Read this book and then you'll know!
Tensions mount after a viral video, uploaded by the FAAC of Julian killing a pregnant whale, causes uproar online and in real life. In the aftermath, Julian becomes the victim of hate crime. In order to avoid further life-threatening attacks, Julian and his daughter take refuge in the home of Frank Blothio: ex-fisherman turned writer and political activist who does not have the best history with the animal rights movement, or Drake Cove as a whole.
As Julian integrates into the Blothio way of life, he discovers heinous secrets and disturbing truths lurking beneath the skin of his hometown that will change his life forever.
This extract pretty much marks the turning point for the main character of From the Deep. Julian Finch is a working-class fisherman, a single father, he’s just trying to get by. The little cosy community of Drake Cove which Julian resides in is under the fierce public scrutiny from the news and the media due to long-standing practice called The Culling. A practice where they lure pilot whales to the shore and slaughter them for their meat. After leaving his home on the way to the beach in this extract, his life takes a full 360 spin. If only he’d known, he should’ve stayed at home…
Today’s meant to signify a celebration, a Drake Cove tradition, yet partying is the last thing I want to do right now. I wake with the cold churn of dread in the pit of my stomach. I change my clothes, make a steaming mug of dirt coffee and chomp on two slices of toast lathered in peanut butter. I need my energy.
After I’m finished, I knock on Em’s door. “Sweetheart? Are you coming?”
There’s no response but I can see the shadows of her feet on the other side. She’s pacing back and forth. When I knock a second time, her shadow freezes as if someone has hit pause on the television. She feels very differently about the culling. My wife and I have taken part since we were infants brought up on the ancient iron rules of Drake Cove. We took Em with us when she was old enough and she burst into tears within the first ten minutes, it was torture. A bad decision on both of us.
“Em? Are you okay?”
A piece of paper is pushed under the door.
Just go. I’ll be fine. Please be careful.
“Okay my lovely,” I say. “There’s pizza in the freezer if you want it. I love you.”
There’s still no response.
I pick up my tools and leave the bungalow, locking the most precious thing to me inside.
