In the vending machine the good drinks have happy face stickers on them and the bad ones didn’t. After accidentally choosing the wrong drink – Torpedo High Energy Drink – from the machine, Jasper finds it tastes good but the effects it has on him are totally bad but he can’t resist keeping sipping it. Lots of bad things happen after he has drunk more of the bad drink – he gets all his mathematics work wrong at school, he ‘stings’ other players at football, can’t stop still, races around and generally does ‘bad’ things! It is when his Dad finishes off the ‘bad’ drink that things really go wrong!

The story is well-written and very funny. Children will easily relate to the events in the tale and really won’t want to put it down. The illustrations enhance the story and are highly appropriate. The book has over 100 pages, the story is divided into chapters and it is a great tale.

The story could be used to stimulate discussion about side effects some foods and drinks can have on people and why. It would also help demonstrate to children that when parents or grown ups suggest something might be bad for them, they could be issuing a really serious warning! It could easily be used as a starting point for work in both PSHE and Science in schools – but it is a great story to read and enjoy just for fun, too!

Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley too
