I’ve read and loved books in the Blackthorn series by this talented author and jumped at the opportunity to read this, her first paperback and the first in a new spinoff series – I’m so glad I did, as it was a ral page turner and great to escape into!

Ember works in Harry’s cafe and is used to seeing the handsome stranger come in and stay for an hour or so every few days. She doesn’t know his name, he rarely looks up, but she can’t help wondering and fantasising about him, even if he is a vampire. She’s working hard to escape from Lowtown, keeping herself safe, working and saving hard to ensure she meets the stringent criteria so she can be one of the few to escape from Lowtown. She’s had a tough life, her mother was killed when her twin brother was snatched when she was only five years old. Now she is on her road to escape the past and build a new future for herself –  until fate steps in and threatens to derail all her plans and ambitions.

This is a well paced story, with the great world building from the Blackthorn series used to great effect and enhanced in this story. I don’t think you need to have read that series to enjoy this one, as the author continually gives reminders and additional information so readers are aware of the various scenarios, rules, restrictions and expectations which apply in this dystopian community. The characters are easy to relate to and empathise with. The dramatic encounters are brilliantly brought to life in the imagination of the reader. I didn’t want to put the book down and the twist at the end is superb! I have no hesitation at all in highly recommending this to anyone who enjoys reading about suspense filled paranormal societies, with mobsters, murder, mystery, magic and romance all having key roles in the unfolding story. I can’t wait to read more in this series!

Many thanks to the publishers for gifting me a copy of this book with no obligation. I chose to read this book and this is my honest review after doing so.
